What is distance learning/video conferencing?

Distance learning is a virtual learning environment which includes all electronic educational communication (video, audio, and/or computer systems) between two or more groups in separate locations. Distance learning provides educational opportunities for students and teachers not otherwise possible within a limited budget.

Video conferencing is a part of distance learning communication that uses two-way, real-time video and audio .

How are programs developed by UCIC institutions?

Presently, UCIC content providers develop all programs for the K-12 target audience. Each institution or organization uses its unique resources, whether that be objects, collections, curators or musicians in educational approaches which assists in understanding academic content standards.

Some programs are a single lesson; others a lesson series, but all are specific and mindful of particular learning objectives and needs of educators and their students. Once a learning concept has been identified, teacher/partners work with UCIC content providers to write and test pilot lessons. All UCIC supported lessons align with educational content standards.

By the time a lesson reaches your classroom for a connection, lessons have been tested and refined. Teacher materials typically accompany the lessons with lesson extensions, vocabulary lists and materials.

How often is the calendar updated?

The UCIC calendar and web site will be updated on a quarterly basis in the months of:
September, December, March, and June each year. An email announcement will be sent to all educators on the UCIC email registry.

How do I connect to UCIC content providers?

In order to connect you will need to have video conferencing equipment (Vtel, Polycom, Tandberg, etc) capable of connecting to the state of Ohio's ATM network. Interested teachers should then search the UCIC database for programs and then follow the links for scheduling assistance. To learn more about video conferencing please go to video conferencing tips.

How do I schedule a distance learning program or participate in an event? How far in advance do I need to schedule?

Each UCIC content provider has guidelines, although it is best to schedule lessons as early as possible in the year to make sure that you are able to get the time slot you desire. When you click on a program or event of interest to you, please follow the scheduling and registration guidelines for that lesson or event listing.

Many of these lessons are specifically designed to reinforce content standards you are teaching in your classroom, so scheduling is not only the time during the day, but also the time you are teaching specific curriculum during the academic year to maximize the learning experience for your students.

How much do I need to know about technology to be able to participate in a distance learning lesson?

If you have the appropriate equipment and connectivity, distance learning can be a simple and enlivening experience for your class. A willing and interested technology teacher or coordinator can help you get started with offering distance learning experiences for you and your students. If you do not have assistance at your school, contact the UCIC Coordinator skreisman@ucic.org

What are the price ranges of UCIC content providers programs?

Prices vary, but typically range from $75.00 - $175.00 per videoconference. This usually includes teacher packets and if necessary, lessons supplies.
